Demands and difficulty

Level: Introductory

Duration: 4 hours

Description: What is it that makes an assessment task hard?  When critics complain about ‘dumbing down’, what are they really talking about, and how can you respond?

This session looks at the concept of ‘demand’, or ‘what assessment setters want the candidates’ minds to do’.  It discusses methods for establishing the demands of assessment tasks.

Topics covered:

  • use of Bloom’s taxonomy and other approaches to establish assessment demands
  • demand studies to compare different assessments
  • difference between demand and difficulty.

Task - Working with own assessments to establish levels of demand.
